Keep the fob with you
Fort Lauderdale police ran a "Where's Your Fob?" campaign urging drivers to lock up and never leave a key or fob in the car (FLPD release). A spare in your home — not in the glovebox — is the cheapest insurance.
Prices by kind of key
| Kind of key | Usual on | Where it falls |
|---|---|---|
| Metal key with transponder chip | Many 2000–2015 cars | lower end of $175–375 |
| Flip key / remote-head key | Many cars from about 2010 | middle |
| Proximity fob (push-button start) | Common since around 2015 | upper end, up to about $475 |
| Exact price depends on year, make and model. Some European models are dealer-only — we'll say so on the call. |
Which cars
American, Japanese and Korean brands for the most part, and plenty of European ones too — call with the year, make and model and you'll hear a yes or no before we drive. Keyless-start fobs and remotes get programmed at the curb, and a stuck ignition cylinder can be repaired or swapped on the spot.
What to bring together
- VIN (bottom of the windshield, driver's side) or year, make and model
- Your ID with the registration or title
- Any working key, if you have one — a spare costs less than an all-keys-lost job
How long it takes
Typically 30 to 60 minutes at the car, after a typical arrival of about 20 minutes anywhere in Fort Lauderdale (we confirm the time when you call). A car on an upper level of a Las Olas garage or the Galleria deck is fine — tell us the level so the van can reach it.
Questions
Rental car key lost?
Rental companies usually handle their own keys. Call them first.
Will a key from an online shop work?
Often not — the chip or blade is wrong more than it's right. Check with us first and save the return trip.
Does the old key keep working?
When we program a new set for an all-keys-lost job, the lost key is removed from the car's memory where the car allows it.
Locksmith or dealer — which is the better call?
For most cars we can do it at the curb, so there's no tow to the dealership and no wait for a service appointment; you hear our total before we drive. Some European models can only be programmed by the dealer, and we'll tell you on the call if yours is one of them.
Lost the only key you had?
We can still make one at the car. The key is cut from the vehicle's code, programmed through the diagnostic port, and the missing key is erased so it can no longer start the engine. Bring photo ID plus the title or registration in your name.
