Lock Change & Installation in Fort Lauderdale

A lock change in Fort Lauderdale costs from $155 a door, hardware included for a standard lock, and the typical bill is $155–285. Near the ocean and the canals the finish matters as much as the brand, and when the old lock still turns smoothly, a rekey from $110 often does the job for less — we'll tell you which one you actually need.

Hardware for salt air

Plated finishes — the shiny chrome or brass look on many builder-grade locks — pit and corrode quickly here. A lock supplier that works in Florida puts it plainly: "salt air attacks plated and painted finishes fast," and recommends satin stainless (finish 630) with stainless fasteners for coastal doors (National Lock Supply). If your door faces the beach, the Intracoastal or a canal, that upgrade usually pays for itself. We fit Schlage and Kwikset as standard, Grade 1 and Grade 2 deadbolts, and finishes in satin nickel, matte black and coastal stainless; for Medeco or Mul-T-Lock cylinders, ask and we'll price the part. On Harbor Beach, the Las Olas Isles and the oceanfront blocks off A1A, stainless is what we suggest first.

How the swap is done

  1. You text us a picture of the lock and the edge of the door. We check the size and quote the total.
  2. At the door, ID first — your name has to match the address or the deed.
  3. We look at the old lock honestly. If it turns fine and the goal is just to retire old keys, we'll suggest rekeying and save you the hardware.
  4. Old lock out, new lock in, strike adjusted so the bolt seats fully.
  5. Tested from both sides, door open and shut, keys handed over, itemized invoice by text or email.

Exit doors keep a thumb-turn

Florida's residential code is built on the IRC, and the IRC wants an exit door you can open from the inside with no key (I Dig Hardware). On doors you'd escape through, we fit deadbolts with an inside thumb-turn rather than a key-both-sides double cylinder.

Changing locks in Sailboat Bend

Sailboat Bend, west of downtown along the New River and home to the Broward Center for the Performing Arts (Wikipedia), has been a historic district since 1992, and some of the city's older houses stand on its streets (Republic Window & Door). Where an original door is still sound, we prefer swapping the cylinder or deadbolt and keeping the look of the door; if you're thinking about a different style of hardware, talk to the city's historic preservation staff before buying it.

Questions

I bought the lock already. Will you install it?

Yes. Installation only, from $110. A picture of the packaging tells us whether it will fit your door.

What warranty comes with a new lock?

Our 6-month workmanship warranty, plus the maker's own — Schlage and Kwikset cover their home locks' mechanism and finish for life and their electronic parts for a year.

How many keys come with it?

Two. More are $5 each, cut right there.

Do you sell keypad deadbolts?

Yes — see the smart lock installation section on our hosts page.

I live in a condo. Is a code-only smart lock a good idea?

Check your documents first. Many Florida condo associations can require owners to hand over a key to the unit (Becker), and a lock with no key cylinder may not satisfy that. A keyed model avoids the argument. More on the condo page.
