What the price covers
- The visit, on the first lock
- New pins in each cylinder and 2 new keys cut to match; extra keys $5 each, cut on the spot
- A test of every lock with the door both open and closed
- An invoice that lists each lock — handy for a landlord file or a home-warranty claim
- A 6-month workmanship warranty on the work
When rekeying makes sense here
- A new home or condo. 3,021 homes and condos changed hands in Fort Lauderdale in 2025 (Miami REALTORS data: houses, condos) — and every one came with keys of unknown history. Florida Realtors' own move-in advice starts with changing the locks (Florida Realtors). See new homeowners.
- Between rental tenants or guests, when a keypad isn't an option.
- After losing a key ring with your address on something attached.
- After work crews — painters, cleaners, contractors — had copies.
- Older neighborhoods. Imperial Point began in 1960 and Lauderdale Harbours is mostly early-1950s houses (Republic Window & Door); if those locks still turn smoothly, a rekey keeps them in service for far less than new hardware.
How a rekey visit goes
- On the phone: how many doors, which brands, and whether you want one key for all of them. You hear the total.
- At the door: your ID against the address, or the deed or lease.
- Each cylinder comes out, gets a new set of pins, and goes back in.
- New keys are cut and tried in every lock before we leave; old keys are tested too, to prove they're dead.
Condo owners and landlords
- Condo units: many Florida associations can require a key to each unit (Becker). Order one extra key for the office on the same visit. Mailbox and lobby keys stay with the association — see condo & high-rise locksmith.
- Rental buildings: Florida law makes "locks and keys" the landlord's job in units other than single-family homes and duplexes, unless the lease says otherwise (Florida Statutes 83.51). It doesn't demand a rekey at move-out, but it's the cleanest way to start a new lease.
- Not as a lockout tool: Florida law bars a landlord from keeping a tenant out of the unit by changing the locks (Florida Statutes 83.67). We rekey a rented unit between tenancies or with the tenant's knowledge, never to shut a current tenant out.
Rekey, or replace instead?
Rekey when the lock turns smoothly and looks fine. Replace when it doesn't:
- Salt air has pitted or seized it — common within a few blocks of the beach.
- The deadbolt sticks or needs the door pushed to throw.
- You want a higher-security cylinder or a keypad. Replacement starts at $155 a lock (lock change). On impact doors, rekeying is the easy route because the approved hardware stays put (impact-door locks).
Locks that can't simply be rekeyed
- Cylinders that are broken or seized inside.
- Some bargain locks with sealed cores.
- On smart locks, only the backup key cylinder rekeys — codes are changed in the app. We'll tell you on the phone if yours is one of these.
Rekey questions
Can one key work for every door?
Usually. Mixed brands sometimes need one cylinder swapped — you'll hear that price first.
How long per lock?
Around 10 to 15 minutes, once we're at the door.
Do I need to be home?
Yes, or someone you've authorized in writing who can show it.
Do I have to rekey every lock at once?
No. Rekey the doors the lost or shared key actually opens; the rest can wait. Doing them on one visit is simply cheaper — the trip is paid once with the first lock, and every lock after that is $50.
